Business Owner: Corey Folster
Location: Provo, Utah
Corey Folster is the owner of Unhinged, where they are the ‘purveyors of the oddly beautiful’ and have been for nearly four years now. His energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Unhinged sells a collection of clothing, accessories and lifestyle items that range from locally made, to vintage. These items reflect Corey’s style and personality; he is proud to say he works with over thirty-five local artist and designers to accomplish this.
Corey’s background is in running big box style retail stores, but that wasn’t all that was going through Corey’s mind, “I decided I wanted to bring something new to Salt Lake, and Utah in general and mix products together differently than you usually find. We went ahead and opened our first location.” It’s been a joy for him to experience the community’s reaction and to meet so many amazing people. Corey himself said this, “One of the best side effects of that has been to meet all of these amazing local producers of anything from clothing, to jewelry, and gifts or candles. That has become more and more a focus in the store, we find great things that are made just around the corner.”
“The biggest win has been the involvement with the local makers of things,” says Cory. I think he coined that term, “Local makers of things,” and it fits very well, It wasn’t his original plan to work with so many locals, but why not? “We just kept finding these people that made interesting things and had nowhere to get them out in front of customers. It’s the most fun part because you get to be out and interact with people and watch their businesses grow.”
Being a business owner is a huge aspect of Corey’s life and he seems to love every minute of it. The hard work is overcome with joy at the end of the day. “I would highly recommend it, it’s a lot of fun and a lot of hard work, so do your homework before you start. A lot of things you have to learn by doing. The more you can be familiar with what that time commitment needs to be and how everything is going to be when you start, the better off you will be.” He breaks it down by simply stating, “Don’t get into something you aren’t prepared for. Figure out what the commitment will be and dare to take the risk because it’s really rewarding.”
