Get to know Soccer City
Business Owner: Rick Olsen
Business: Soccer City
Location: Draper, Utah
Meet Rick Olsen
When you walk through the front doors of Soccer’s City, you immediately feel the passion and positive energy that has been established there. You would have never guessed the amount of time that Rick Olsen invested for this soccer facility to be built but he owned the land for several years before he was able to launch Soccer City. It may have taken 6 to 7 years for this soccer facility to be fully up and running but if you ask any of the regular players, it’s paid off. Olsen describes the work that it took to build his business as an “uphill battle”. The endless bumping in his path never exceeded his drive for his ending goal of Soccer City.
Soccer City Supports Locals
Soccer City gives back to the local community by providing an indoor training center that is now a landing zone for all soccer players both young and old. These avid soccer players now have a proper indoor facility to come and train at during Utah’s cold winter months. “I am passionate about my business mostly because of seeing how much it does for the kids, the community, and for the game of soccer,” said Rick. “When you live in a state with cold weather, like Utah, our teams go and try to compete against kids from Arizona and Southern California but just get trounced. It takes something like this where they can do better training all year round; It brings us up to where we can better compete with these teams.”
Still in the Game
Despite the countless people who discouraged Olsen to give up on his dream, Olsen’s passion lead him to never give up. Rick comments, “A lot of people said that we would fail but here we are two years in and we’re in the black. Your competition wants you to fail, so to be able to prove to the doubters that we can make it work has been a great feeling.” He silenced them all as Soccer City is and now one of Utah’s most successful indoor soccer facilities.
If you want to follow your dream like Rick you should follow his advice: “You have to have two things: you have to have the passion, but the passion alone won’t only do it. You have to have the willpower. You are going to get told by people you can’t do it and you have a lot of uphill battles. It has to be something that you want to do and make business sense of it as well.”
